In a rapid evolution of the electric vehicle market, a new contender emerges, one that boldly claims to "fully surpass the Tesla Model Y." With an introductory price starting at just 179,900 Yuan ($24,000), this mid-size all-electric SUV is raising eyebrows and enticing potential buyersWould you take the plunge on this limited-time offer?
Launched recently, the Lantu Zhiyin has positioned itself as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, entering the mid-size electric SUV segment with a pricing strategy that catches attentionThe vehicle, priced between 196,900 to 236,900 Yuan ($27,000 to $32,500), offers a promotional deal for the base Long Range Smart Enjoyment version, making it even more competitive with a special price of 179,900 Yuan for the first batch of 3,000 units.
In comparison to the Tesla Model Y, which costs between 249,900 to 354,900 Yuan ($34,000 to $48,000), the Lantu Zhiyin undercuts its rival by a significant 70,000 YuanUpon its debut, it boasted an impressive 8,126 ordersThe question now arises: can this model become a best-seller?
The Tesla Model Y has recently been under much scrutiny; as a long-standing leader in China’s mid-size SUV market, the Model Y has faced intensified competition from a slew of new entrantsFrom brands like Xiaopeng to idealistic newcomers such as Leado L60, Zeekr 7X, and the newly launched Zhijie R7, many have chosen to take on the Model Y as their primary rival.
Among this competitive set, the Lantu Zhiyin stands out with the lowest starting priceIt is available in four configurations: the Long Range Smart Enjoyment, Four-Wheel Drive Global Version, Long Range Fast Charge, and Ultra Long Range Smart Enjoyment, priced at 196,900, 202,900, 202,900, and 236,900 Yuan, respectivelyFollowing the promotional deal, the entry model is 70,000 Yuan cheaper than Tesla's offering.
Looking at its specifications, the Lantu Zhiyin exhibits a compelling value proposition

At the launch event, Lantu’s CEO, Lu Fang, claimed that its configurations exceed those of the Model YHowever, is that really the case?
According to the official website, the Lantu Zhiyin emphasizes high endurance, ultra-fast charging capabilities, and spaciousness, targeting the family market.
On the suspension front, the Zhiyin utilizes a MacPherson front and multi-link rear independent setup, while similar-priced competitors like the Model Y feature a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear independence suspension, typically recognized for enhanced handling and stabilitySome users on social media noted a noticeable head-lift during takes-off with the Zhiyin.
In terms of performance, both the Long Range Smart Enjoyment and Four-Wheel Drive Global versions come equipped with a 77 kWh battery pack built on a 400V voltage platformThe Long Range Smart Enjoyment version offers 625 km of range, whereas the Four-Wheel Drive Global Version is unique amongst the configurations for its dual motor capability, providing a range of 570 km.
The other two configurations, the Long Range Fast Charge and Ultra Long Range Smart Enjoyment, are equipped with larger 79 kWh and 109 kWh batteries, respectively, all leveraging an 800V silicon carbide platform, which enhances charging performance and speedTheir pure electric ranges are 650 km and 901 km.
However, only the Long Range Fast Charge variant is equipped with 5C super-fast charging technology, allowing for a rapid charge from 20% to 80% in just 10 minutesThe more expensive Ultra Long Range Smart Enjoyment with a bigger battery does not feature this technology, leading to some confusion around the overall configurations.
Moreover, it's important to note that the batteries used in the Lantu Zhiyin come from CATL and Sinovac, and models with different battery suppliers might exhibit variances, although consumers may not have the option to choose their preferred battery manufacturer.
The Zhiyin does provide ample space, boasting a trunk volume of 527 liters, which can be expanded to 1,400 liters by folding down the rear seats

In terms of cabin features, all four configurations come equipped with Lantu’s flagship cabin design powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip, and they provide a 29-inch high-definition AR-HUD among other advanced featuresHowever, some consumers may find the dashboard's size a bit limiting.
When it comes to intelligent driving, the Lantu Zhiyin does not utilize the latest Lantu Dreamer’s Huawei QianKun driving ADS 3.0. Instead, it features Lantu’s own Kunpeng intelligent driving system, complete with 27 sensors throughout the vehicleThe marketing suggests that it achieves L2.9 advanced driving capabilities, but a glance at the specifications reveals it lacks capabilities like urban navigation assistance and automated parking that are often expected in higher-end intelligent driving offerings.
Furthermore, across the four versions, Lantu has ensured that features emphasizing comfort, cabin functionalities, and driving intelligence are largely standardizedExcept for the entry-level Long Range Smart Enjoyment version, all other options come bundled with ultra-soft suede trims and imitation suede seatsAmenities such as 128-color LED ambient lighting, 50W wireless charging, electrically adjustable seats, front seat ventilation, heating, and massage options, along with memory settings for the rear seats, are standard across the board.
Clearly, the Lantu Zhiyin is characterized by both strengths and weaknessesConsidering its pricing significantly undercuts the Model Y, will it truly secure a spot as a blockbuster?
In the Chinese automotive landscape, Lantu represents a unique entityAs a subsidiary of Dongfeng Motor Group, Lantu established itself as a premium new energy brand right from inception, differentiating itself from the value-centric strategy of Dongfeng’s gasoline vehicles, aiming squarely at competitors like Nio and Li Auto.
The Lantu FREE marked the brand’s debut into the market in June 2021, offering both range-extended and purely electric variants, priced between 313,600 to 333,600 Yuan

This positioned it competitively alongside models like the Li ONE and Nio ES6.
May 2022 saw the introduction of the Lantu Dreamer, the world's first luxury intelligent electric MPV, starting at 369,900 Yuan.
In April 2023, the first sedan from Lantu, the Zhui Guang, entered the fray with a price range of 322,900 to 432,900 Yuan, aligning it closely with the Nio ET5.
However, as the market evolved, all three previous Lantu models experienced price reductions of varying degreesNotably, the Lantu FREE and the Zhui Guang now start at around 200,000 to 250,000 Yuan, excluding the Lantu Dreamer.
In terms of sales, Lantu's momentum has been less than explosive since its inceptionSales in 2022 and 2023 totaled 19,400 units and 50,300 units, respectivelyAs of the first nine months of this year, Lantu’s total sales reached 52,500 units.
Interestingly, the Lantu Dreamer, despite being the highest-priced model, has surprisingly become the best-selling, a rare occurrence among new energy contenders.
In September, the updated Lantu Dreamer was launched, with top-tier models featuring Huawei’s QianKun driving ADS 3.0 and HarmonyOS, plus laser radar capabilitiesThat month alone, its sales soared to 5,400 vehicles, ranking it fifth among all MPVs.
However, the MPV segment's market size pales in comparison to SUVs and sedansMonthly sales for leading models typically hover just above the 10,000 markWith the Lantu FREE and Zhui Guang yet to yield significant sales breakthroughs, Lantu is in dire need of a model focused on the mainstream market, and the Zhiyin is expected to fulfill this pivotal role.
Differentiating itself from its predecessors, the Lantu Zhiyin’s starting price drops below 200,000 Yuan, fitting squarely into the larger mid-size SUV category.
In this arena, the Tesla Model Y has been a persistent sales champion, with other new energy competitors primarily focusing on range-extended and plug-in hybrid models
